The Stories That Don't Trend

A few weeks ago, an extraordinary event took place in Nigeria. Forty-five undergraduate students from different parts of the country were awardedΒ up to ₦50 million eachΒ to fund innovative projects capable of solving significant societal problems.

Yet, this remarkable achievement barely made headlines.

There were no widespread discussions, no trending hashtags, and very little public attention. Why? Perhaps because the story did not fit the prevailing narrative that only negative things happen in Nigeria.

At the same time, social media platforms were consumed by debates over comments made by the First Lady many of them based on clips or interpretations from people who may not have watched the full video.

This contrast raises an important question:

Why do we often ignore positive developments while amplifying controversies?

Understanding the ₦50 Million Student Venture Capital Grant

Why This Initiative Matters

Nigeria is home to one of the youngest populations in the world. The country's future depends not only on identifying problems but also on empowering people who can create solutions.

These 45 beneficiaries are Nigerians. They do not belong to any political party. They are students with ideas, determination, and the courage to build something meaningful.

Their success should inspire conversations about:

  • Innovation and entrepreneurship.
  • Youth empowerment.
  • STEM education.
  • Building solutions for national challenges.
  • Creating globally competitive Nigerian startups.

A Balanced Perspective

Criticizing government policies is part of a healthy democracy. Holding leaders accountable is important. But democracy also gives citizens the freedom to recognize and appreciate initiatives that genuinely create opportunities.

An environment where everyone only wants to take, complain, and criticizeβ€”without contributing ideas or solutionsβ€”will struggle to move forward.

Progress requires both accountability and participation.

The Bigger Question

How many young Nigerians discussing daily political controversies know that a program exists that can provideΒ up to ₦50 million in fundingΒ for their innovations?

How many students with brilliant ideas are aware that they could receive funding, mentorship, and access to advanced AI tools to turn their concepts into real businesses?

Perhaps the stories we choose to amplify shape the future we eventually build.

Nigeria's challenges are real. But so are its opportunities.

And sometimes, the stories that deserve the loudest applause are the ones that never trend.
