As mobile filmmaking continues to rise, the need for expanded storage on devices like the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max has become crucial. With 4K footage quickly consuming available space, Lexar has introduced the Professional Go Portable SSD with Hub, offering up to an additional 2TB of storage. This new gadget not only increases storage but also allows for ProRes video recording at 60fps and provides extra USB-C ports for connecting other essential accessories.

While external storage solutions for iPhones aren’t new, Lexar's product stands out with its compact design and integrated USB-C hub, which ensures it doesn't add excessive bulk to the device. This design makes it easier to use the iPhone with other accessories, such as handheld gimbals.

The system consists of two key parts: the SSD and the hub. The SSD, available in 1TB and 2TB options, boasts impressive read and write speeds of 1,050MB/s and 1,000MB/s, respectively. It can be connected directly to the iPhone's USB-C port or positioned more discreetly using an included angled adapter.

The four-port USB-C hub is a valuable addition, although two ports are used by the SSD and the iPhone connection. The remaining ports are ideal for other accessories like microphones or external power sources with up to 30W power delivery. Both the SSD and hub have an IP65 rating, offering protection from rain or light sprays but not full water immersion.

While Lexar primarily markets this product for iPhone 15 Pro users, it is also compatible with Android devices featuring USB-C ports, support for USB On-The-Go (OTG), and a USB load capacity of over 4.5W.

Lexar is launching the Professional Go Portable SSD with Hub through a Kickstarter campaign, offering promotional prices for early backers. The SSD alone costs $129 for 1TB or $209 for 2TB, including accessories like the angled adapter and a protective case. Adding the hub raises the price to $159 for 1TB and $239 for 2TB, with extra accessories like a cold shoe adapter included. Full retail prices will be higher, with the 1TB and 2TB SSD plus hub expected to retail for $239 and $349, respectively. Shipping is anticipated to start in September.

Though there’s always some risk with crowdfunded projects, backing an established company like Lexar reduces those concerns. For those in need of more storage and connectivity options on their iPhone 15 Pro, the discounts offered during the crowdfunding campaign may be worth considering.
