Google recently held its Made by Google hardware event, unveiling the latest additions to the Pixel lineup, including the Pixel 9 series and other device updates. While many details had leaked prior to the event, Google still had some surprises in store. Here's a summary of the key announcements:
Google’s Expanded Pixel 9 Series
Google introduced its largest Pixel lineup yet, featuring three standard phones and a foldable device. The new models include the Pixel 9 with a 6.3-inch display, the Pixel 9 Pro XL with a 6.8-inch screen, and a smaller Pixel 9 Pro with a 6.3-inch display. All models feature a redesigned oval-shaped camera, an upgraded G4 Tensor chip, improved battery life, and a satellite SOS feature. Prices start at $799 for the base model, $999 for the Pixel 9 Pro, and $1,099 for the Pro XL. Shipping for the Pixel 9 and 9 Pro XL begins on August 22nd, while the smaller Pixel 9 Pro will be available in September.
The Pixel 9 Pro Fold
Google also revealed the Pixel 9 Pro Fold, a slimmer and taller foldable phone compared to its predecessor. The device boasts a larger outer screen at 6.3 inches and an 8-inch inner display, with the latter offering peak brightness of 2,700 nits. Equipped with the G4 Tensor chip, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold will be available starting September 4th, priced at $1,799.
New AI-Powered Features
The Pixel 9 series comes packed with AI features, including the Gemini AI assistant, which helps users find information within apps or analyze photos. Two new AI apps, Pixel Screenshots and Pixel Studio, allow users to search saved screenshots and generate images from text prompts, respectively. Enhanced image editing tools have also been introduced, such as the "Add Me" feature and Magic Editor in Google Photos, which now lets users replace entire sections of photos using generative AI.
Pixel Watch 3 Upgrades
The Pixel Watch 3 now comes in a larger 45mm size, alongside the existing 41mm option. This new model features thinner bezels, a brighter display, and new fitness features. A key addition is the ability to detect if the wearer’s pulse has stopped, which could trigger an emergency call if no response is detected. The 41mm watch starts at $349.99, and the 45mm at $399.99, with availability beginning on September 10th.
Enhanced Pixel Buds Pro 2
Google’s Pixel Buds Pro 2 have received both internal and external upgrades. The new earbuds are smaller, lighter, and feature 11mm drivers with a Tensor A1 chip, promising better active noise cancellation. They also have a wing fin design for added stability and offer up to eight hours of playback with ANC enabled. Priced at $229, they will be available starting September 26th.
Gemini’s Voice Chat Feature
Google's Gemini AI now includes a voice chat feature called Gemini Live, which allows users to engage in conversational interactions with the assistant, available in 10 different voices. This feature is rolling out to Gemini Advanced subscribers now.
Overall, Google's event showcased significant enhancements across its Pixel devices, emphasizing AI integration and user-focused features.
