Google has announced an exciting new feature for its latest Pixel 9 phones: Satellite SOS. Unveiled during their recent Pixel 9 launch event, this feature enables users to connect with emergency services and share their location via satellite, even when cellular service is unavailable.
This makes the Pixel 9 the first Android phone to offer such a capability. Google’s Brian Rakowski highlighted that Satellite SOS will be available in the US, regardless of the user's carrier plan, and will be free for the first two years after device activation. However, it remains uncertain when this feature will be extended to other Android devices.
Google's introduction of Satellite SOS comes after Apple’s launch of a similar service, Emergency SOS, for iPhones in November 2022. Apple's service offered users an additional year of free coverage, but starting November 2025, users will need to decide whether they want to pay for continued access.
Google's move to include this critical safety feature in the Pixel 9 reflects a growing trend towards integrating satellite communication in smartphones, especially for emergency scenarios. While Qualcomm attempted to launch a similar service for Android, it wasn't successful, making Google's Satellite SOS a significant step forward for Android users.
As technology advances, such features are becoming more vital, ensuring that users can stay connected even in the most challenging situations.
