Atari is bringing back its classic 7800 console with a modern twist. This reimagined version, called the Atari 7800 Plus, not only preserves the retro charm but also supports both Atari 2600 and 7800 game cartridges, just like the original. It comes equipped with an HDMI port, making it easy to connect to modern TVs.

Priced at $129.99, the Atari 7800 Plus is currently available for preorder, with a worldwide release planned for late 2024. Similar to Atari’s previous mini-console releases, the new 7800 Plus maintains the original design from 1986, only in a more compact form. You can choose between playing in widescreen mode or the traditional 4:3 aspect ratio for that authentic retro feel.

The console comes bundled with the new CX78 Plus Wireless Gamepad, a replica of the classic two-button controller, which is also available separately for $34.99. The gamepad is compatible with other Atari devices like the Atari 2600 Plus and can be connected to a PC using a USB-C adapter. Another new controller, the CX40 Plus Wireless Joystick, also retails for $34.99 and supports both the PC and the 2600 Plus mini-console.

Atari boasts that the 7800 Plus offers “near-perfect compatibility” with original and third-party games. The console ships with one game, Bentley Bear’s Crystal Quest—a follow-up to the classic Crystal Castles—but 10 additional games can be purchased separately for $29.99 each.
