Samsung has introduced its latest Odyssey gaming monitors, featuring eye-tracking technology that delivers a glasses-free 3D experience. The Odyssey 3D, which will be available later this year in both 27-inch and 37-inch models, allows users to easily toggle between 2D and 3D modes. This innovation may attract gamers intrigued by 3D gaming but hesitant to invest in the technology.
First showcased as a concept at CES 2024, the Odyssey 3D monitors boast a 4K QLED panel with a 165Hz refresh rate, a 1ms response time, and AMD FreeSync support. Connectivity options include one DisplayPort 1.4 and two HDMI 2.1 ports. The monitors also come with a height-adjustable and tilting stand for optimal positioning.
The 3D experience is achieved using a lenticular lens paired with a built-in eye-tracking camera. This combination directs separate images to each eye while continuously adjusting the depth perception through view mapping. Similar technology is used in Acer’s SpatialLabs devices. While the stereoscopic 3D effect is limited to one viewer at a time, it’s perfect for solo gamers. My personal experience with this technology has been impressive, offering a thrilling experience without needing special glasses.
Currently, pricing details remain undisclosed. However, considering Samsung's typical Odyssey lineup costs and Acer’s similar products, the Odyssey 3D is expected to be a premium offering.
