Apple is rolling out significant changes for iPhone and iPad users in the European Union (EU), allowing greater customization of default apps. Later this year, a new "Default Apps" section in Settings will be introduced, enabling users to select their preferred apps for phone calls, messaging, keyboards, and password management.

In early 2025, this flexibility will extend to navigation, translation, and call spam filter apps. For those looking to streamline their devices, users in the EU will also be able to delete many built-in apps like Messages, Photos, and even the App Store itself. However, core apps like Settings and Phone remain undeletable.

Apple will also improve its browser selection screen for EU users, making it easier to install alternatives like Firefox, Chrome, or DuckDuckGo when first opening Safari. Developers of these browsers will gain more insight into how their apps perform on this choice screen, offering better optimization opportunities.

These changes align with Apple’s compliance with the EU's Digital Markets Act (DMA), which aims to level the playing field among tech giants. As Apple continues to adjust its platform in the EU, users can expect even more control over their devices.
