Samsung's AI-powered food and recipe app, Samsung Food, has introduced new features that could simplify meal planning and food management. The app now allows users to add items to a Food List by simply taking a photo, and it suggests recipes based on the food available. The app automatically updates the list when ingredients are used and adds items back after shopping.

Previously, the Food List was only accessible via Samsung's SmartThings app and Family Hub smart fridges, limiting its utility. Now, as part of the cross-platform Samsung Food app, these capabilities are more widely available, potentially transforming the app into a comprehensive tool for shopping, food management, meal planning, and cooking.

These updates are part of Samsung Food Plus, a paid tier of the app priced at $6.99 per month or $59.99 per year. In addition to the Food List feature, this tier removes ads, offers a personalized seven-day meal plan, allows AI-driven recipe customization, and tracks nutrition goals. The app works on both iOS and Android and requires a Samsung Account.

The standout feature in this update is Vision AI, which uses your phone’s camera to identify food items and add them to your Food List. The app can recognize over 40,000 types of ingredients, significantly more than the 33 items identified by the AI-powered cameras in Samsung’s Family Hub fridge. Additionally, the app features AI-guided cooking steps that can control compatible Samsung ovens directly from the app.

Launched at IFA 2023, these new features are being announced ahead of the upcoming tech show in Berlin. The updates aim to enhance the app's functionality as a meal planning tool, making it easier to track what's in your fridge and pantry, plan meals, and reduce food waste and grocery bills.

Samsung Food Plus is rolling out now, offering tailored meal plans based on your nutritional needs, dietary preferences, and previous recipe choices. The free version of the app provides three days of meal recommendations.
