As the world's second-largest memory chip maker, SK Hynix plans to build its first chip plant on a sprawling 4.2 million sq. m. site, marking a significant step for the company’s mid- to long-term growth. This investment will cater to the rising demand for AI semiconductors.

The site will eventually house four cutting-edge chip plants and over 50 local firms, boosting the semiconductor industry in the region. The initial investment will cover utilities, business support, and welfare facilities until the end of 2028, including a research facility to test 300-mm silicon wafers.

SK Hynix recently reported its highest earnings since 2018, highlighting the increasing demand for AI chips. The company also announced a $3.87 billion investment in an advanced packaging plant and R&D facility in Indiana, USA, earlier this year.

"The Yongin cluster will be the foundation for SK Hynix's mid- to long-term growth," said Kim Young-sik, the firm's head of manufacturing technology.
