As a key Nvidia supplier, SK Hynix, the world’s second-largest memory chip maker, is making a strategic move with a 9.4 trillion won ($6.8 billion) investment in its first chip plant in South Korea. This bold step responds to the surging demand for AI semiconductors.

The ambitious project includes building four state-of-the-art semiconductor plants near Seoul, with construction starting in March next year and completion slated for May 2027. The site will cover 4.2 million square meters, housing four advanced chip plants and over 50 local firms in the semiconductor sector.

The facility will also feature a ‘mini-fab’ research center for processing 300-mm silicon wafers, providing a realistic environment for local chip materials and equipment manufacturers to test their innovations.

This new fab will be part of the Yongin Semiconductor Cluster near Seoul, a government initiative to create a large-scale chip operations complex. SK Hynix’s investment will bolster South Korea's leadership in memory technology, crucial for AI applications.
