The US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has ruled that Amazon is responsible for recalling hazardous products sold on its marketplace, including those from third-party sellers. The CPSC found Amazon failed to adequately notify the public about over 400,000 recalled items, such as faulty carbon monoxide detectors, flammable children’s pajamas, and hairdryers posing electric shock risks.
Despite Amazon halting sales and attempting to alert buyers, the CPSC insists the company follow strict recall procedures to ensure public safety. Amazon's notices were criticized for downplaying hazards and lacking clear, accessible product images.
Amazon has launched a recall page for customers to check product safety information and has stated plans to appeal the CPSC's decision. Meanwhile, the company must now implement a new plan to properly notify and incentivize customers to return or destroy dangerous products.
